Thumbsucking: When to Worry Elk Grove, CA
A baby with a toothbrush.

Babies and young children adopt many different habits to soothe themselves. While you may be elated to see that your newborn has found his or her thumb to go to sleep at night, you are probably not as thrilled about your preschooler’s persistence with the habit. As children get older, parents primary concern with thumbsucking is the affect it can have on children’s teeth. This is a valid concern.

During thumbsucking, there is constant pressure on the teeth. This may influence bone growth or even alter the shape of the roof of the mouth. The front upper teeth may start to push out while bottom teeth cave in. An equally important consequence from thumbsucking is the potential for speech and swallowing challenges.

While the bad news about thumbsucking can be scary (or costly), there is some good news. Most children drop their thumb soothing habit by about age 3 or 4. At this point, there is usually no harm done. However, if you have a school-aged child (age 5 or older) that gravitates towards that thumb frequently throughout the day, you may be in for some trouble.

What Can You Do?

Always try a positive approach when helping your child break a thumbsucking habit. Remember this is what they have used to soothe themselves since they were babies in most cases. You may try replacing this habit with a lovey or other item to help your child adapt to a different habit of security.

In more severe cases or when your child is older and still sucking his or her thumb, you can enlist the help of a dentist. There are special products that can be painted on the thumbnail. These solutions taste very bitter and discourage the child from putting the thumb in the mouth. If you’ve tried everything to no avail, you can ask your dentist about a “tongue crib” that fits in the roof of their mouth to prohibit thumbsucking. Be aware that this device can be very frustrating for a child at first.

If your child sucks his or her thumb, don’t stress yourself out too much – unless it’s getting time to go to school. At Ora Dentistry, we treat children with compassionate, superior care. If we suspect a problem with your child’s teeth due to thumbsucking, we will take a proactive approach and work with you to determine the best solution before the habit ruins their smile.

Very confused by the website and advertising as an after hour/emergency dental service. I broke a tooth this evening and was looking for emergency dental services for the earliest appointment. I called and a receptionist/operator picked up on a Friday evening close to 8 p.m. and said that the emergency dental service was only for existing patients. That isn't on the website and in fact, the top line on the website states if you need emergency dental care , call. Don't mind that they aren't able to see me, but the operator needs a better script when explaining their services and should also provide better service or don't be an after hour receptionist. She also never asked me if I WAS an existing patient. Would love to give no stars, but I can't post unless I pick one. UPDATE: So wasn't expecting the owner of the practice to call me. I spoke with Dr. Dalla and he explained in detail their policies and calmed my anxiety regarding my broken tooth.. I appreciate that he is a business owner that pays attention to what is being said about his practice and would take the time to follow up. I may have found a new dentist.

I’ve been searching for a dental office for my special needs daughter for a long time. I called many offices explaining her situation that she had Autism and anxiety and I was told they didn’t see special needs kids. I came across Ora Dentistry through my google search and gave them a call explained to them my situation and they told me they’d be happy to see her. We scheduled an appointment. On the day of the appointment I called again and explained her situation and told them she would like her sister and mom to be there for support due to her anxiety and they were totally accommodating and that put me at ease. We got to our appointment and were greeted by Bridgette she was AMAZING with my daughter she made her feel SUPER comfortable through out the entire process! I’ve never seen my daughter so calm and relaxed. When the doctor came in to do his exam on her he too was beyond nice and again made my daughter feel at ease. I really have to thank Ora dentistry for their excellent service! If you have a special needs child this is the place to go! Highly recommend it!

Two years ago I visited this office to assess the viability of getting an implant for a lost tooth. On that first visit Dr. Dalla had x-rays taken, made the assessment, provided me with options, including performing an implant on a lost back molar. I consented, and right then and there, he performed the actual implant and gave me a return appointment to insure all was healing well. Then, 3 months later, he fitted me with the abutment and took impressions for the crown. Two weeks after that the crown was installed. Not only was the work done in record time, but it has been the best fitting crown I've ever had, and I've had 18 crowns in my lifetime of 68 years. This was my second implant. My first implant was by another dental office and does not come close to compare with Dr. Dalla's work. His implant and crown feel like healthy, natural teeth, and in fact, I chew most of my food using that new "molar." I wish I would have gone to him long ago. By far the best around. He is a perfectionist, and is demanding of himself. Just what you should want in someone performing your dental work. Highest recommendations!
