As part of our cosmetic dentistry services at Ora Dentistry, we use tooth-colored composite resin fillings for cavity repairs, chip corrections, and replacement of older metal restorations, delivering results that are both clinically sound and virtually invisible.

Composite fillings have become the standard of care for most tooth repairs. Unlike traditional amalgam fillings, composite resin bonds directly to the tooth structure, which means less healthy tooth material needs to be removed during preparation. The result is a more conservative repair that preserves more of your natural tooth.

What Is Composite Resin?

Composite resin is a durable, tooth-colored material made from a blend of synthetic components including fine glass particles and resin. It is applied in layers and hardened with a specialized curing light between each layer, creating a strong, flexible restoration that closely mimics the look and feel of natural tooth enamel.

Because composite can be precisely color-matched to your existing teeth, fillings placed with this material are nearly indistinguishable from the surrounding tooth structure. This makes composite an excellent option for visible areas of the smile as well as back teeth and molars.

What Can Composite Fillings Address?

Composite resin can be used to treat a range of dental concerns including new cavities, chipped or cracked teeth, worn tooth surfaces, and older amalgam fillings that a patient prefers to have replaced. Most composite filling procedures are completed in a single visit.

For patients who have older metal fillings that contain mercury or other materials they would prefer to have removed, composite offers a safe, aesthetic alternative. Our team will evaluate existing restorations and discuss whether replacement is clinically appropriate for your situation.

If you have a cavity to fill, a chip to repair, or older metal fillings you would like replaced, contact Ora Dentistry today to schedule a consultation at our Elk Grove office.

Frequently Asked Questions About Composite Fillings

How long do composite fillings last?
With proper oral hygiene and routine dental visits, composite fillings typically last seven to ten years or longer. Longevity depends on the size and location of the filling, as well as individual habits such as teeth grinding or chewing hard foods.

Are composite fillings as strong as metal fillings?
Modern composite resin is highly durable and appropriate for most tooth repairs including back teeth and molars. While amalgam fillings were once considered stronger, advances in composite materials have significantly closed that gap. Your dentist will recommend the most appropriate material based on the size and location of the repair needed.

Is it worth replacing old metal fillings with composite?
Replacement is a personal decision and not always clinically necessary. If an existing amalgam filling is intact and functioning well, replacement may not be immediately recommended. However, if a metal filling is worn, cracked, or failing, replacing it with composite is a reasonable option. We evaluate each case individually and will give you an honest recommendation.

Will a composite filling be noticeable?
Composite resin is color-matched to your natural tooth shade, making it virtually invisible once placed. Most patients find that composite fillings blend seamlessly with surrounding tooth structure and are undetectable in normal conversation or photography.

Does getting a composite filling hurt?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so patients typically feel little to no discomfort during treatment. Some mild sensitivity in the treated tooth is normal in the days following placement and generally resolves on its own.
