A happy man with a perfect smile.

When a tooth is damaged by decay, trauma, or extensive dental work, a dental crown is often the most effective way to restore its strength, function, and appearance. As part of our general dental care services at Ora Dentistry, we offer custom-crafted crowns, inlays, and onlays designed to protect damaged teeth and deliver natural-looking, long-lasting results.

Tooth enamel is remarkably durable, but it has its limits. Once a tooth is significantly compromised, it becomes vulnerable to further damage, infection, and structural failure. A well-placed crown restores the tooth to full function while protecting the remaining structure from additional harm.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-fabricated restoration that fits over the entire visible portion of a tooth above the gumline. Crowns can be made from porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination of materials depending on the location of the tooth and the patient’s preferences. For most patients, tooth-colored porcelain or ceramic crowns are preferred because they closely match the appearance of natural teeth and are virtually indistinguishable once placed.

Crowns are recommended when a tooth has extensive decay that cannot be addressed with a filling, has been cracked or fractured, has undergone root canal treatment, or requires significant structural rebuilding. Dr. Dalla will evaluate the tooth thoroughly and recommend a crown only when it is the most appropriate and conservative option available.

Dental Inlays and Onlays

Not every damaged tooth requires a full crown. When damage is limited to a specific area of the tooth, an inlay or onlay may be a more conservative and appropriate solution.

An inlay fits within the cusps of the tooth to restore a damaged interior surface where a filling is not sufficient. An onlay covers one or more cusps of the tooth when the damage extends to the outer surface but does not require a full crown. Both restorations are custom-fabricated to fit precisely and are bonded securely to the tooth for long-term durability.

If you have a damaged tooth that needs evaluation or repair, contact Ora Dentistry today to schedule an appointment at our Elk Grove office.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns

How long do dental crowns last?
With proper care and routine dental visits, dental crowns typically last ten to fifteen years or longer. Longevity depends on the material used, the location of the crown, oral hygiene habits, and whether the patient grinds their teeth. Dr. Dalla will discuss the most appropriate material for your situation during your consultation.

Is getting a dental crown painful?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia so patients experience little to no discomfort during treatment. Some sensitivity around the prepared tooth is normal in the days following placement and typically resolves on its own. A temporary crown is placed while your permanent restoration is being fabricated.

How many appointments does a crown require?
Most crown procedures require two appointments. The first involves preparing the tooth, taking impressions or digital scans, and placing a temporary crown. The second appointment involves removing the temporary and cementing the permanent crown once it has been fabricated. Our team will give you a clear timeline at your first visit.

What is the difference between a crown, an inlay, and an onlay?
A crown covers the entire visible portion of the tooth. An inlay restores damage within the cusps of the tooth. An onlay covers one or more cusps when damage is more extensive but a full crown is not yet necessary. The right choice depends on the size and location of the damage, and Dr. Dalla will recommend the most conservative option that adequately restores the tooth.

Are dental crowns covered by insurance?
Most dental insurance plans provide coverage for crowns when they are deemed medically necessary. Coverage amounts and limitations vary by plan. Our team can help you understand your benefits and discuss payment options before treatment begins.
